Providing Drawings or Samples: Getting the Information Right from the Start

A comprehensive information package that enables an accurate quote typically includes the following: 3D CAD models (STEP or IGES formats preferred); 2D engineering drawings specifying dimensions, geometric tolerances, material grades, and standards for unspecified tolerances; physical samples (it is common to have a reference part without the original drawing, in which case we perform reverse engineering); surface finish color swatches or color codes, along with salt spray test duration requirements; and annual usage volume versus batch size (these figures directly determine whether to use stamping dies or laser cutting).

The most common issues arise when clients provide only renderings, or 3D models without 2D drawings. Renderings cannot be used to define the manufacturing process—we are forced to reverse-engineer the design based on experience—and the time cost of subsequent back-and-forth verification is far higher than simply providing the proper drawings at the outset.
