Machinability directly determines processing efficiency, tool wear, and machining precision.

Moderate hardness is essential: Excessive hardness (e.g., unannealed high-carbon steel, cemented carbide) accelerates tool wear and complicates machining; insufficient hardness (e.g., pure aluminum) leads to issues like built-up edge (sticking) and burrs, compromising surface quality.

Consider cutting characteristics: Factors such as cutting force, cutting temperature, and chip-breaking performance are crucial. Materials with good chip-breaking properties (e.g., free-cutting steel) minimize chip entanglement during machining.

Match Material to Application

Structural parts: Require strength and rigidity; prioritize steel or aluminum alloys.

Transmission parts: Require wear and fatigue resistance; consider alloy steel or stainless steel.

Corrosion-resistant applications: Select stainless steel, aluminum alloys, or titanium alloys.

Lightweighting requirements: Select aluminum, magnesium, or titanium alloys.

Low-cost general-purpose parts: Select standard carbon steel or cast iron.

Consider Post-Processing Compatibility

If the product requires subsequent welding, plating, coating, or heat treatment, material compatibility must be considered.
